fixed problem on my machine myself by manually removing entry for linux-
image-2.6.31-16-generic in /var/lib/dpkg/status then reinstalling

package linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-16-generic 2.6.31-16.18 failed to
install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exi
For me it is reproducible in the same way as Yang Zhang said.
Does it have something to do with graphics card maybe? I have NVidia
propriety drivers installed. I tried the live CD on my laptop (which has
intel graphics) and couldn't reproduce the error.
