Public bug reported:
I use ubuntu 8.04.
Today I got updates for apache version 2.2.8-1ubuntu0.1. Since I don't
need apache anymore I decided to uninstall it in synaptic. Then i went
to update manager and check, but the updates were still there. After
computer restart the updates were still there.
It was offering updates to the packages I had mentioned,
(apache2.2-common, apache2-mpm-fork and apache2-utils, and libapache2
-mod-php5) and yeah I had everything removed. Also there were no apache
processes running. However there are still some files in the
/etc/apache2 directory.

I just had the same thing happen with MySQL and this time everything

What worked for me was changing profile to Analog Surround 4.0 Output

surround tab in alsamixer controls the volume smoothly for me.
