Symptom:
The screen blanks every couple of seconds (at irregular intervals) when
I use it at the highest resolution (1600x1200). It goes off for a second
or two. I am not sure whether the DVI signal really is absent for so
long or whether the screen takes that long to recover

Thanks, it does work now with the new intel xorg drivers from
http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu, so this seems to be
related to the old intel drivers.

Just starting gwenview messes up the color setting by re-setting the
color profile (or by loading another one, I don't know).

I noticed that this seems to be a general KDE-related issue: When
profiles are loaded with dispwin (from ArgyllCMS), they are reset when
most applications are started. This does not happen, it seems, with xcalib.
