After fetching all the updates and running the hardware drivers
application again, direct rendering is OK! I'm booting back to my main
partition to see if I can fix the problem in this way or if it really is

The reason the hardware drivers manager wasn't working was because I was
running the wrong kernel -- 2.6.22-14-generic instead of
2.6.22-16-generic. My computer wasn't upgrading properly: even though it
claimed to be up to date, i

Hibernate still flashes the screen, and displaces cryptic messages about
the usb, but it does eventually power down, and resumes naturally. If
you want to work with the screen flashes and stuff, keep it open. But
those are minor problems, and I'll understand if you close it. I'm just
glad that the

yes - the install borked my hsync and vsync. I had to manually
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to change nv to nvidia, and plug in the
correct sync values.

the one error I do see is that nv guesses that the vert sync range is
50-160 when it is actually 50-120 according to gateway. That makes it
try to use resolutions that are too high I think, like 1280x1024.

OK - for some reason, nv can recognize my screen a lot better now than when I
upgraded to herd 5. WIth the sync lines HASHED I get lots of resolutions (plus
the undesireable "virtual screen size" of 1280x1024)

Before I upgraded to feisty, I had 1024x768 resolution, with nvidia
legacy drivers.
Now my xorg.conf is the same (contains 1024x768) but I can't change the
resolution to this with the Prefs>Screen Resolution menu.
1. gksu "update-manager -c -d"

Running sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (with proper hsync and vsync
values) and then a restart has fixed the problem with the resolution.
I'm not sure why it happened to begin with, but at least it's an easy
fix.

A warning is definitely needed. In the English language version, as well as
in German, "proposed" sounds like "newer" packages. A new user who's opened
software sources to enable -updates or even -backports is very likely to
enable -proposed as well without knowing that it's for testing software.
I was unable to work on this computer for some time, but in october, I
installed 9.10 to see if the problem had been fixed. Wireless
functionality was still broken, so I'll get new logs as soon as I can.
One question -- on an installation without networking, is it possible to
download apt packages

Here are the logs. I turned on the computer, put in my keychain password
when prompted by nm-manager, waited, put in my WPA passkey when
prompted, waited, put in my passkey when prompted again, waited, and the
third time, clicked cancel instead of putting in my passkey.
I disabled WPA and attempte

Fabio Rodriguez's solution worked for me, except I used flashplugin-
installer instead of adobe-flashplugin.
mkdir /var/cache/flashplugin-installer
sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/flashpl
Starting today (March 11, suspend has woken flawlessly the last three
times in a row. If there was any kernel upgrade in that time, it appears
to have fixed the "wake from suspend" aspect of this but.
I will test Hibernate three times and get report my findings.

Hibernate appears to work, but takes a long time to go into hibernate,
and a long time to wake up from hibernate. That might be normal, but
also, while hiberating and while waking up, I get three messages in this
vein:
