I have that problem on ubuntu jaunty. In my laptopn (semprom, 512mb ram)
I login into gnome and press the menu button. It takes about 3-4 seconds
until I can see it. The new users (or old users :) can think Ubuntu is
slow (really it is slow the first time I open the menu)

I did install ubuntu feisty and I did actualize to hardy.
I have not installed any software, only the ubuntu repositories packages
I had not any problem on install, Ubuntu did detect my card, install the
restricted driver and all ok.
When the error occurs, I cannot see any error doing dmesg...

I had the same problem. When X starts, no keyboard and no mouse but the
pointer (in the login box) works and the sound.
My problem was the /etc/init.d/hal script. It was empty And then hal
did not start.
I reinstall hal (sudo aptitude reinstall hal) in the recover mode and
all works again.

Sorry I did'nt see the previous comment.
The problem is when I search for a word and the control+g (spanish
language). If there are not another search, in the botton bar the stop
icon is shown with a text "No se encontró la...". The bar with that text
is gratter than the screen and firefox resize
