Workaround that seems to work:
Running ir-keytable -t as my user gave "permission denied" on
/dev/input/event16 and /dev/lirc0. After adding my user to the "input"
and "video" groups that own those devices, the remote works correctly.
However, I also have to manually load the custom keymap before

I have continued to research this issue. In the meantime, I have also
upgraded to Ubuntu 17.10 and the issue persists with kernel 4.10.0-19.
My research eventually turned up this thread containing a workaround for the

Thank you. I tried 4.8.6 and it seems to work fine. Hopefully the
radeon fixes will make their way into the Ubuntu 17.04 4.10 kernel soon.

Public bug reported:
Mythmusic will not play recently ripped *.ogg files, even those ripped
by Mythmusic itself. It will play a large collection of *.ogg files
that were ripped several years ago.
Newer ogg files that will not play in mythmusic do play correctly in
rhythmbox and also with mythavt
