I can confirm this. The kernel update leaves me with a blank screen too.
Everything works, though: the welcome sound is played back and I can
restart the computer using the power key, the cursors and pressing
Enter. Even the backlight control works fine to tune the screen to your

Other possible culprits are initramfs and usplash, which were also
updated today. However the old packages are not in my /var/cache (I

I have a Philips X59 (yet another UK-only rebranded Dixons laptop) with
the same problem. I ought to mention that the alternate install CD
(available from http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04/ ) uses debian-
installer, and it should take the boot option sdhci.blacklist=yes , as
suggested by Jen
I've just installed the system using the alternate-install CD as I said
before. Although this doesn't _solve_ the problem (no live CD, and no
card reader), if you want to _bypass_ it:
- Install from the alternate CD. The sdhci module will not interfere with the
process.
- When done, boot again fr

checking, though). Looking at the changelog, there may be changes
addressing some of the problems voiced here (PCM volume issues are
mentioned, for instance).

The same LAN card is in my Eee PC 1201N. The system freezes on large
file transfers over LAN (~ a few GiB between my computers over
ssh/sftp), again with no trace of a crash anywhere in /var/log. Does
this happen to the submitter too?

It seems to be based on a different version. Yours is version 0015
(released on the 11th of March), while in the Ubuntu kernel version 0014
is used instead. The files under linux
I was about to add that this bug seems fixed in lucid, but clearly

- eeepc_laptop.ko does not load with the out-of-the-box configuration
- with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux", the module loads correctly

I've encountered more instances of this oops, including one involving
