I am trying to boot Ubuntu off a live USB stick (no disc drive), but get a
kernel panic or a non-responsive system on every boot.
If I allow the start
I tried booting the Maverick Alpha 2 image off USB and got it to show the "low
graphics mode" error, but it still fails to start X even in low graphics mode.
I opened up the X.org log and at the end of the log it says:

unzip security update leads to extract
Well, that was quite easy. After I reverted unzip, I successfully
extracted the code base, and checked out the most recent revision.

I created the attached zip file containing a new svn repo. The password
to this archive is UnzipBug.
On my computer I found that unzip gave up as reported. I then reverted
as instructed by Seth and found that the problem did not appear.
I hope the problem is reproducible.

Also happening to me - same symptoms. Updated server to 13.04.
MOTD still says "New release '13.04' available"
"reboot" command on its own works fine - it displays the following:
