It simply doesn't mount the phone when I plug it in via USB.
This is what dmesg reports when the phone is pluged in.

I have the same problem with Sony NWZ-A628 but I did want to use the MTP
protocol because of label managing and so killing hald wasn't my chosen
solution.
I solved the problem installing the plugin for support for MTP devices
in RhythmBox (pay attention not to have it installed with that for iPod
a note to my previous comment:
you need to have Rhythmbox already open when you plug-in the Sony Walkman in
order to prevent ubuntu to managing the player by itself
