Attached is a screenshot of the fractional kernel stack trace that appears when
I am able to bring up the system with an HDMI display attached.
Without the external display the system definitely doesn't come up
Confirmed present on 16.04 with kernel 4.4.0-24 and latest BIOS (4.0.7)

Ok, the magic workaround is to disable the "Legacy option ROM" feature
in the BIOS, which happens to be the BIOS default. Go figure why the
kernel stopped liking whatever that setting implies.

Since updating to 16.04 with kernel vmlinuz-4.4.0-22-generic my laptop
no longer completes the boot sequence under a normal boot scenario - the
"loading initrd..." message is displayed, then, when the VGA modesetting
usually kicks the display into a higher resolution, the

and filming the kernel bring-up messages, I see that it the very last thing
displayed is:

Just tried 4.5.3-040503-generic from the mainline ppa repo

The behaviour is superficially the same as with 4.4 -- nomodeset is required to
boot.

I can't go any further than installing and testing ready-built kernel
deb packages, I'm afraid.

Still occurs at about the same time as a Wifi dropout (which requires a reload
of the wifi kernel modules to clear). Not clear which is causative of the other.

Sure there is something more proactive that can be done than mere testing of
new kernels and BIOSes?
It should be possible to isolate the cause of the problem by comparing the
diffs between 4.2.0-040200 and 4.2.0-35-generic, as I mentioned above.

I have had to revert completely to 4.2.0-35.

gconf-editor -> apps -> gnome-terminal -> global -> untick
confirm_window_close
This no longer works with 15.04.
The above process inserts that key into the config

I have Ubuntu 13.10 guests on an Ubuntu 13.10 host, using QEMU and KVM.
I have one shared directory, shared with the QEMU argument:
-virtfs
local,path=shared-filesystem,security_model=none,mount_tag=context \
and mounted on the guest as:
/lib/mod/mount -t 9p -o
Confirmed that the regression is in 3.11.0-12-generic. Reverted the
kernel of the host to 13.04's vmlinuz-3.8.0-31-generic , with no other
changes to the OS, and the problem is fixed.
