OK, I just found out that I can get mplayer/SMPlayer to work with
AC3/DD/DTS via SPDIF (passthrough) on the same file by doing this...
mplayer -ao alsa:device=iec958 -ac hwac3 ExampleMovie.mkv
Alternatively, I just added the line in SMPlayer under Options >
Preferences > Advanced > Options for MP

I should add that when I say "no longer work as expected" in the main
post - that the DPI of the mouse does *not* actually change, whereas it
did in 9.10 Karmic Koala.

I'm having the clock skipping issue on my Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit install
(EeePC 1000HE) - it appears to be fine on my 2 Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit
installations (Q6600 Desktop, E8300 Desktop).
I've set the time on all machines to update via NTP. Note that the time
IS synchronised between all 3 machines - ho
Just a note that the buttons now work, they started to work a few days
after I posted the bug. So something that came through in an update must
have fixed them! :) Yay!
The weird OSD still shows up - but it's not really a problem - since the
buttons for DPI Up/Down now work fine.

Just an FYI, the camera seems to work now - some recent update must have

This appears to be fixed with VLC 1.1.0.2~ppa1 from C-Korn VLC PPA.
Thank you to the VLC team and whoever else was involved! I can now have
DD5.1 and DTS decoding for movies that have the tracks embedded, and all
other movies fall back to stereo sound output or whatever they have
embedded.
