No, that xorg.conf fails also. Since the attached log mentions "vesa",
I double checked the xorg.conf and it does specify S3.

Public bug reported:
On a fresh install of 8.04.1 on a Compaq Armada 7800, the generated
/etc/X11/xorg.conf does not work. Earlier versions (7.04, 7.10) DO
generate a working xorg.conf. The work around is to install xorg.conf
from an older install. I have saved the non-working xorg.conf. I had
working xorg.conf (from 6.06, I think)

I see this bug report is being associated with a trouble-free version of
xorg. The bugs exist in the fully updated 7.10 xorg and the version
for 8.04RC.

Sorry, I copied over a working version from Gutsy and did not save a

I am having this problem with a 7.10-i386-alt install CD. The CD
installed OK on a Compaq Armada 7800, but not on a Dell Latitude C600.
The CD verifies ok on the target systems.

My Acer has a webcam that is recognized as a scanner device by all three
scanner aps: XSane, ScanLite, and Scanner Utility. All three aps also
recognize my CanoScan LiDE25. I just tested the webcam with ScanLite.
Worked fine.

Thanks for the information. How do you think you got past
I recently upgraded from 9.04 to the released 9.10. I noticed that
flash had stopped working and started googling around to find the
reason. How disappointing to find this bug known in the release
candidate but unaddressed in the release. Indeed, "unassigned".

I've encountered this bug with 9.10 64 bit on Acer notebook with a
CanoScan LiDE25. Scanner works great with both ScanLite and Scanner
Utility but not XSane.

The work around link just worked again for me. Here is the same through is.gd:

I agree that it is a bug that should be fixed; should have been fixed
before the release. Meanwhile, I/we need working systems, so the work
around IS needed.
Since I don't contribute much to Ubuntu
I have a possibly related bug. I use a very old NFS server running
Caldera OpenLinux from 1998. It mounted fine on Ubuntu 9.04 and many
other Linux flavors. However, after upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10, it no
longer mounts but fails with the message "failed: RPC Error: Success"

I have encountered this bug on all versions of Ubuntu since 6.06 up to
and including 10.10. This affects Compaq Armada 7400 and 7800s and
probably all boxes with s3 video.
