Yes it is. Its a rather annoying bug that is a regression from Karmic.
1 Step to reproduce:
Switch the GDM to lets say Japanese. Log in as any other language and most (not
all) of the system has Japanese Menus.
Completely reproducible on all 4 of my computers, worked perfectly in Karmic.

run failsafeX from the recovery tools (I had to append the i915.modeset=0 to

I have plymouth 0.8.1-1 I booted a couple of times and nothing has
changed. So for me this has not been fixed, sorry. I have an 8400M
nvidia with the propriety driver. Something did actually change. Before
I got Ubuntu in and white dots below it in what looked like courier
font, now I just get a pl

The only difference is that I go straight to GDM or to a screen with the
wallpaper of my GDM and no login interface.

Well this may work with grub but I thought the grub2 the VGA= command
was depreciated.
Removing the # from the GRUB_GFXMODE command in /etc/default/grub
Adding set gfxpayload=keep after the set gfxmode=${GRUB_GFXMODE} to the

I tried to add the the set gfxpayload=1280x800x24 prior to the linux
command but the console and splash display in 640x480. Here is my
/etc/grub.d/10_linux, linux_entry function. I would like to get this
working as now the boot experience is just plain ugly:

The actual grub2 screen where you select OS, etc works well in 1280x800x24. Its
only the terminals that get messed up.
I tried what you suggested and I still get a garbled screen.
Interestingly since the yesterdays updates it says it cant find terminal early
in the boot process.

Well before the updates I had ttys at the lowest resolution and the
screens were garbled only if I tried to set the resolution using
gfxpayload grub command. Now the screens are garbled with any setting,

OK the latest round of updates got rid of the garbled terminals at all
resolutions. Terminals are back to normal when gfxpayload is not set in
the 00_headers file. When gfxpayload is set to keep I just get a
flashing cursor in the tty windows. This occurs at

I just upgraded to Karmic. There is a new xrand bug that stops gsd
loading and that plugin needs to be disabled; I should report a new bug
maybe. Anyway the keyboard plugin patch appeared to work as when I
enabled the plugin gsd started. However on subsequent restarts gsd

I have this issue still with 2.6.31-18-generic on my XPS M1330 with an Intel
4965 card.
BIOS set to toggle Bluetooth only with the killswitch.
If switch is off or on no wireless on coldboot.
If switch is toggled then wireless starts.
If I blacklist dell-laptop then the switch behaves as expected.
Sorry chrisp didn't work for me. tried the nvidiafb as well but as soon
as gfxpayload is set then the tty's are lost.

I have two identical laptops (M1330). One with grub 2 cannot display the
tty's if gfxpayload is set. One works flawlessly with the terminal at
1280x800 with grub 1 and VGA=0x0361

I tried the Jeremy's ppa on Beta 2 Ubuntu 12.10 (gnome shell) and it

I am still getting this bug:

Interestingly its only when I am logged in. Other users do not get it. I
have tried deleting the eog config files in my account but this did not
help. I have the l

Solved for me. For some reason the /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume
file was missing
I opened a file here then inserted the swap UUID
RESUME=UUID=
Saved it then did an sudo update-initramfs -u
Now hibernate works.

I just bought two new drives (WDC WD10EALX-009BA0) and a new SATA 3 capable
mobo (MSI 890FXA-GD70).
On setup it was very unstable and I got lots of errors, freezes and whatnot
under normal use:
