file, not a directory. The following solved my problem:
sudo rm -rf /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
to delete the directory. Then create it as an empty file:

It's not a regression, because support for symbolic colours was introduced in
one of the recent patches. Previously GDM themes with a gtkrc that used
symbolic colours didn't load at all.

The native resolution of my notebook's LCD display is 1280x800. This is
set in xorg.conf.
The logo only looks "round" on 4:3 displays. On displays with a
different aspect ratio such as 16:10 or 16:9 the logo is stretched.
