Just a comment.
I reinstalled kubuntu amd64 with the same repositories and hardware and now
everything is working, no bell bugs.
It looks like a bug related to the 32 bit version, can you please DannyKing
confirm you are using a 32 bit installation?

As I werote in my case the bug went away by switching to the 64 bit
installation,

I confirm this bug for a hp dv 2000
ubuntu ibex intrepid dvd playback freeze while in windows works.
A typycal dmesg output:

The problem is related to the http_proxy variable
I had it set to
http_proxy=
For most of the program this does not affect, for streamripper it implies it
does not interpret the url correctly.
The problem is solved by
unset http_proxy
Every thing goes back to normal

Just a note,
the same fix works with vlc,
now it also connects, so try avoid having an empty http_proxy variable

I had the same problem.
I solved it by running alsamixer in a terminal window.
It looks that by default the PCM line of the sound card is muted. You can
change the volume with the arrows, you select the PCM column and use the up
arrow to increase the volume,
