More evidence toward this being a strange ALSA driver issue.
If I get a 44.1kHz DTS (or 44.1 Dolby Digital) file playing using
"aplay" or "listen" music player, it outputs noise. If I then type
"iecset audio 0" to give the SPDIF out the correct headers, it goes
silent. If I then mute/unmute the ma

run madfuload on the correct device/usb port, it exits with a seg fault,

requires using the slower noxdamage. It does not fix the regression. If

I have managed to make the problem disappear. And reappear.
On a fresh reboot, if I go to menu->System->Preferences->Sound, set one
of the "Sound Playback" drop boxes to be the ALSA digital output, and
hit the "test" button, the sine wave is usually (if not always)
distorted. If I run alsamixer in
Muting/unmuting the "master" also fixes it. Also, adding
"model=thinkpad" and/or "position_fix=1 [or 2]" in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-
base.conf does not fix it.

I am running the newest drivers and kernel. I'm running on a Lenovo
laptop. Oddly enough, when I had an external monitor connected, and was
only outputting to that, sync to vblank worked correctly. Now that I'm
using the built-in laptop LCD, it sync to vblank causes the ~0.5Hz

I have managed to isolate this issue. It appears to be caused by the
loading/unloading of the sound controller.
If I play a test sinusoid through gstreamer-properties, I can hear it

A note on the Apport submission:
I did a new install of Lucid on my laptop. I enabled auto-login and
installed some other software.
I used system->preferences->sound to change to the digital out/analog in
from the default analog duplex.
I had to then open alsamixer to unmute and raise the volume

It works fine now. I had "Always Sync to Vblank" selected in DriConf,
and that apparently didn't get along with the "Sync To Vblank" in
Compiz. Once I changed the settings in DriConf and restarted, sync to

For what it's worth, I commented out the `mystatedir statedir ifindex
interface` line, and changed the three `return` lines to be `exit 0` and
now I no longer get the angry red FAILED line during boot, `systemctl
status networking.service` looks okay, and my internet continues to

those names in Synaptic), I do `sudo apt-get install python-pycuda
python-pyopencl` and get:

Yeah, 2.6.36 in the mainline ppa (comment #19) fixed it for me, too. As
it was a kernel issue, I marked it invalid here. I'm not sure if that is
the correct label, but it wasn't the xorg people's problem in any case

You could try making a .asoundrc file in your home directory, or modifying
the parameters in the alsa.conf (I think) in /etc/modprobe.d/. if you look
online for how to make your own asound.conf, you will find the alsa wiki
which has lots of info.
