This has nothing to do with rmmoding usbhid and then modprobeing it back.
The problem seems to have fixed itself somehow for me (kubuntu 8.10).
I don't know if it's because of recent updates or software I've installed
recently. I'll promise to investigate this further with clean install of
The previous comment contains errors - then I said kubuntu 8.10 - I
meant kubuntu 8.04.1 (hardy heron). Sorry.

Ok. I'm not going to do clean install of kubuntu hardy heron (8.04)
since the mouse wheel problem is back. Fortunately I found out how it
fixed itself - I've to plug in USB Logitech RumblePad 2 joystick, reboot
laptop and unplug the joystick (remove the joystick) as soon as I see
the BIOS screen.

so basically if I type "man:xorg.conf" into konqeror address box it
doesn't show up and kio-man process goes crazy using

ok so there are 2 workarounds in edgy:
1) use usb mouse
2)
sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse rate=40
*at this point I have lost touchpad scrolling, etc. - it behaves like usual
mouse - to fix that I have to log out and restart X >> now I got working
touchpad at rate 40:
cat /sys/b
finally I have found the way how psmouse rate can be changed during boot
up in ubuntu:
open /etc/modprobe.d/options
and add line
options psmouse rate=40
