For me, the issue with having to *shutdown* kdm *prior* to doing the
upgrade is separate from the issue of configuring 'libpam0g'. I don't
think I even had the dialog about libpam0g.

Confirmed here, on Kubuntu 8.04.1, upgraded from 6.06 LTS.
As a workaround, you have to click away from the checkbox to see if it
is checked or not, OR set focus to another window.

What about KDE? (The same thing has bugged me, but I don't use Gnome.)

For what it's worth, I too think 'wishlist' is pretty low for an issue

I am not fully aware of all the reasons, but "the correct practice" is
indeed to use the graphical sudoes (gksudo or kdesudo) to launch
