Hi All, I found a solution for Ubuntu 9.10: do a fresh install of Ubuntu
9.04, then upgrade to 9.10 via the Update Manager's "Upgrade" button.
Then wifi is happy.

Actually, ignore the bit about bootloader/grub2... who knows why it
doesn't work with a fresh install of 9.10. :P At least I got the wifi
working and didn't have to go shopping for another distro/version.
