Hopefully, now that this has all been figured out, maybe Ubuntu 12.04

I too have this problem in Intrepid, I'm using an Intel X3100 on a Dell

properly. Should this bug be reopened?

Yes, it IS pesent in Windows too. Just checked it in Vista SP1, and not
only with my ears, but also with smartmontools and hdparm for Windows.
Vista does the same as Ubuntu: nothing... it just let's the hdd manage
itself. I fixed it in Linux with setting hdparm to 254 while on AC mode

This is not flash related. It happens for me in VirtualBox and DosBox
too. I have a Dell Studio 15 with Intel X3100 graphics. I think this is
an xorg bug.

@Gunni: Have you red my previous posts? Exacly the same thing happens
with VirtualBox, DosBox, even Android SDK (which uses Qemu). Screen
contents freeze until they are moved somewhere. But after a few seconds
they freeze again, but in the background they continue running.

I can confirm this. I'm using Intrepid Alpha6 on a Dell Studio 1535 with
the same video card. The funny thing is, sometimes it boots up
correctly, but some times the screen gets messed up with red/orange and
the booting hangs. I have to turn off my notebook by pressing the
shutdown button for 5 sec
