I've just upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid and got this problem, FIXED it
by enabling "Audio Settings Management (alsa-utils)" on services, that
is:
System > Administration > Services > [check] "Audio Settings Management
(alsa-utils)"

This problem is NOT Ubuntu specific, I've recently upgraded inkscape
from package 0.48.0-1 to 0.48.0-3 (Now 0.48.0-4) and there where also
some libraries in the upgrade, since then this bug appears, tried to
return to 0.48.0-1 but I can't because of some library incompatibility
So no... It is NOT
Oh... Forgot to mention that my distro is Archlinux
