I have the exact same issue. This didn't happen until after I added in
an ATI Radeon HD4650. Prior I was using integrated nvidia graphics.

This affects me as well. I have the Asus Eee PC 1005PE.
The manual workaround that some have discussed in forums doesn't seem to
work anymore. Manually selecting heaphones in sound preferences worked
for Karmic, but not Lucid. Cannot hear sound from headphones at all.
