I think this bug has a workaround in Bug 441161 but I am too much of a
newby to understand the instructions. which part is terminal code and
which just information? How do I check that solution applies? I seem to
have module b44 but my wireless was only disabled after update.

Ah, nuts...It couldn't be that easy!
The DELL inspiron 1520 I am using has an external "wi-fi" catcher switch with
three positions.
0=Off, I=On, >>=scan for wireless networks.
I assumed the neutral poisiton was 'On', but the wifi actually works in Ubuntu
set to 'Off'.

Acer has been quite awkward about the RAM in this model, their agent
will supply extra but void warranty if I instal it myself, so by net
brick is in the shop until next week.
I would love to test it and I think I MAY be able to follow your
instructions then, wish me luck.

I understand the guilty device is a UB6250 from various posts, but I
think that may be a false presumtion as according to the ene technology
official site all their card readers can be used with "various OS" but
there is no UB6250 listed.
