Okay went and tried other distros over the last week or so... First I think your problem is specific to the intel NIC/chip on your machine(s). That being said, updating the specific intel driver may work fine in your situation, but I was addressing the larger more general issues regarding ethernet

I am a relative noob to linux in general, admittedly most of my knowledge or experience in linux is a hodgepodge of miscellaneous things to fix what I have broken usually. Because of this I have found this same or similar problems on virtually every Debian/Ubuntu et al., board or forum I have seen.
