Wow, first date I can find for this is 3 YEARS ago. Please, please, if
you're not going to fix this, at LEAST change the error message!
Had this problem for days, over the course of about three weeks, trying
10.04.1, 10.10, and Mint9.
Went out and bought a new DVD drive: didn't help. Burned ISO a

Mint Linux 10 install to a "no brand" PC with 448MB RAM (512MB
less 64MB for video) into a 41GB partition on an 80GB HDD:

Okay. All installation attempts that use Ubiquity fail. Installing from
the alternate CD which does not use Ubiquity worked immediately. Not
sure how that equals hardware or kernel problems, but you're the
experts. Thank you for investigating this problem.

try the install.
