You are right- when I played movue in totem, I was able to hear the
sound of pidgin.
however, theres times I cant hear sounds in pidgin, untill I reboot my
system.

I don't know why, but I installed karmic again on the same machine (dell
Inspiron 1520) , while it is connected to Ethernet, and now the Ethernet
and wireless are working (after installing the non-STA driver. I will
try the STA again and post here the results.

Daniel, I tried what they suggested, but ssb still loads because it required by
b44- the driver for the ethernet.
As a workaround I use the b43 driver, which gets a weaker signal but works. I
will try to install the previous version of wl (sta) driver as suggested here.
