having the same issue with clean default install of kubuntu herd 5.
just after install, ran adept and update all.
just after download, got the nice error message and been kicked out of the
application.
aptget fail as well
i have tried to skip x11-comm

managed to progress by using :
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo aptitude upgrade
i am left with the following package that fail to upgrade :
