I have the same "Failsafe" sections in xorg.conf and the login screen
resolution is larger than will fit on the screen.

I'm afraid that hasn't quite fixed the bug.
When hddtemp isn't running, adding the computertemp applet to the panel
causes something completely unusable to be added to the panel! I'm
seeing 1 black pixel appear on the panel (against the new transparent
background - nice!), or sometimes a vertical
confirmed in hardy.
