thank you. Although I don't see a change in any of the scripts and the
grub-pc version did not change, that appears to have solved it. I am
still not sure why all my updates and selecting "use the maintainers"
version does not keep everything completely up to date but the issue is
gone.

Well, Karmic Beta is out and the problem apparently remains. I've dealt
with half a dozen new users in the past week who had to reinstall
because of this bug. This is very discouraging. It doesn't affect me
personally but every time I read a forum post by a new user about this

Turns out the ONLY way I can hide the menu is with the one setting I was
using after the latest grub update.
I test booted about 25 times with various settings and the only one
which would hide the menu during boot was the one with this line
included:

I couldn't navigate to the said folder because Nautilus crashed whenever
I clicked on any folder.
I resolved the crashing problem by removing ubuntuone-client-gnome. No

While testing variations of the hidden menu option and booting into the
console mode (which is the only way I can get the hidden timeout to
display) I also got the error message. Since the offending lines add an
aubergine background to the grub menu, I'm guessing the default.grub
file could be spec
I believe the setting is now in dconf, and can be set to eliminate the
password request with:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen 'true'
