After upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, I've got now sound anywhere.
I checked alsamixer, nothing is muted, everything is on and sliders are
at 100%

That didn't quite work for me, but after a hard reset, I have sound working on
audacios but only through alsa, not through pulseaudio.
Other applications, like vlc/totem/mplayer are still not giving me any sound
even through alsa, and not flash

Problem was solved.
I did complete removal of all packages related to alsa and pulseaudio (except
for the libraries, cause too many other packages depended on them), purging all
configuration files. And than installed everything again. Now I have sound
through pulseaudio in all applications work
ubuntu-desktop is just a metapackage.
AFAIK, the only problem that you'll have when you remove it, is that package
manager will not be suggesting you packages that _become_ part of standard
ubuntu-desktop distribution. But it will suggest all of them to you as soon as
you install the "ubuntu-des

K3B can't burn stuff either, due to OPC/Power Calibration Failure.
So the bug isn't in Brasero.
I know that the drive works fine though, since I have no problem burning stuff
with Windows/Nero

Umm, actually it doesn't burn stuff on Windows any more either... Same error.
Bug can be closed I guess. Sry.
One note though is that every burner I tried other than Brasero reported "Power
Calibration Failure" and not just "Unknown Error". Descriptive error reporting
never hurt anyone.
