The BIOS version available on the mfgr's website is actually older than
what mine came with. Well I should say, at least a higher number. I've
emailed Acer about this a couple times... they tell me there are no
updates to my installed version. It must not be a released version.

The above posted solution by WANTED works. I had to make a slight
modification. On this one, running Kubuntu 8.04.1.
I had to, of course run those commands with sudo in front. But for the
last one, instead of '> sky2.ko' I used '> /home/user/sky2.ko' and then
'sudo cp /home/user/sky2.ko
/lib/modul
Same, I don't use compiz. Just plain KDE4. Honestly, on my laptop I hear
it start to play but gets cut off... on my desktop I never hear it.
Other sounds and the shutdown sound work just fine on both systems.

OK, Ever since updating to 3.0.10 I've been having lots of crashes.
Randomly. I assumed it was just firefox. So I didn't disable any
extensions. This has been a couple days now and no updates to Firefox so

Yes, a BIOS update was my first thought. Unfortunatly this is an older
model and Acer hasn't released an update for years, I doubt they will

What I'm seeing on my laptop, I do not see in the screen shot. You'll

Here's an update. I've been doing updates right along and it hasn't
started working.
However, after an update yesterday (15+ packages), I couldn't boot to X.
So I rebooted and from GRUB I choose the "safe mode", I forget what it's
called recovery?
Anyway, I got to an ASCII based Recovery Menu
Update: Just updated to latest kernel. I know, I saw the change log,
there wasn't anything addressing this issue, but I've upgraded anyway.

OK, so it was due to an unofficial package? Can we "close" this bug

What status do we choose for that? I don't see one that's fitting for
closing this without relying on supplying a "fix", but there is no fix
(other than removing the unofficial package).

I don't know if I'd consider this fixed. I saw this problem after
upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy.
To fix I needed to:
sudo mv /etc/xdg/menus/applications-merged

/etc/xdg/menus/kde-applications-merged.old

That's nice they tell you to enable that stuff in your BIOS. But doesn't
address people that state that it already works in another OS (XP) or in
a previous version of K/Ubuntu.
Like me, CPU frequency scaling on my AMD laptop worked find in Gutsy,
but Hardy tells me there's something wrong with th

I think adding sisfb to /etc/modules did it.
I didn't spend too much time on the laptop today, but I was on just long enough
to upgrade it from intrepid to jaunty and still saw the video artifacts.
After rebooting with sisfb added, video looks much better. I'll do
further testing as time allow
It's an Acer Aspire 3000WLCi.
We have another one in the family that is of the 5000 series and it
appears (according to what I can see in the BIOS and on Acer's website)
that they use the same BIOS file.

Nope. Just updated Jaunty on my laptop fully and removed WICD and
installed plasma-widget-network-manager. Rebooted and added the widget
to the desktop.
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG.
Doesn't offer WPA2 as an option. WICD works fine. Now I need to go find
my wire and reinstall WICD.

I Just upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid A4 last night. I get no errors
when it loads the ipw2200 module, and I can see wireless networks. But I

FYI: I had the same result when trying to upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy
(prerelease) on 3 different machines. Install would fail on a few
packages after this one as well and then just hang. I had to close it
and manually do sudo apt-get -f install and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade a

I thought I wasn't. Because I tried ENVY, but it didn't work after a
reboot. So I tried to use the restricted drivers manager (jockey-kde)
and sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't detect that I have an NVIDIA
card, so I don't know what it was using.

Same problem here that csh mentions. Using Kubuntu Fiesty with backports
and kubuntu.org/packages/kde-stable enabled. Was working ok before 3.5.7
upgrade. apt-get works fine.

I can confirm that I saw this problem on 2 Gutsy Kubuntu installs and
one of them was just upgraded to Hardy beta yesterday and I still see
the split info bar resize problem. Dolphin seems pretty slick, but who's
maintaining it now? Anyone?

I can confirm that I got this same error when just mousing over a .html
file in Dolphin. So far, mousing over or selecting any other file type
seems ok.

I have edgy and have KDE 3.5.6 already. I've had deb
http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-latest edgy main
in my sources.list file for a while now.
I got as far as it telling me there was a new version, I hit next through the
wizard. Clicked finish and it just went away. Nothing more. Waited 5 mins,
Possible solution to above posted issue. I tried several times to let it
run through. Each time I was starting Adept Manager from command line.
Sorry, habit. Kdesu seems to not always be consistant, sudo does. I ran
Adept Manager from the K menu, upgrade is running ok as of now.

I'd like to help with testing or info gathering if I can. I upgraded
from Jaunty on a production box and now have no KDE desktop. Had to
install ubuntu-desktop to get something. It's clunky, but it's a
workaround. I really need to get back into KDE though.
