No, when I asked them, the SRU team emphasized they'd only accept
patches to the driver in Hardy, not the entire newer version of the
driver. Marking as fixed for intrepid with task for hardy if the patch
can be isolated and ported.

There doesn't seem to be anything in the X log/config to suggest this is
an Xorg issue. Maybe collect backtraces from the crashing applications
to see where they're crashing. If there is a common lib or something
they're all showing crashes in, then file this bug against that package.
Meanwhile,
Seems like a kernel issue. Feel free to reopen against xorg if there's
proof it's X and not the kernel at fault.
