too don't understand why if someone was willing to make a patch, the
patch would be denied.
The fact that there may be other ways to do something has rarely been a
good argument against a ~particular~ way of doing something.

I used Roman Yepishev's workaround earlier
( sudo apt-get remove gir1.2-unity-3.0 )
which seemed to fix things for me.
Later on I noticed the libunity update had been pushed out, and I did
not notice a file named similarly to gir1.2-unity-3.0 in those updates.

I also have the same problem, and for me it was was working on Lucid 64
bit Ubuntu Desktop edition. It stopped working with the 64 bit Maverick
beta.
Using a Compaq Presario CQ60-215DX laptop, no virtualized, just dual-booting
with Windows 7.
I did not do a clean install of Maverick, just a dist-
