I forgot to mention, that the error occurs not only when i change the
icons but also the border and the look of the buttons (dont know the
correct names at the tabs, in german it's
'Symbole','Fensterrahmen','Fensterinhalt', sry).

1. cd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/
ln -s libglx.so -> extensions/libglx.so.96.43.05
2. Restart
3. Aktivate compiz
4. restart X (ctrl+alt+bk

Numlock is disabled after login, but stays enabled during a session.

bluebox was the hostname when i installed feisty.
IWNETZ was the Workgroup when i used samba to connect with vmware.
System5 is the hostname now (/etc/hostname), but i don't remember when and how
i changed it.
This bug is fixed for me too. Thanks!

I had the same problem with some odd effects.
barcc:~$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 bluebox.IWNETZ
...
1) After installing sudo 1.6.9p9-1ubuntu1:
barcc:~$ sudo ls
sudo: unable to resolve host System5
barcc:~$ gksudo gedit test&
(nothing happens, i have to do: kil

I had the same Problem.
The packages ubuntu-desktop gnome-session were removed, but i cant remember,
that i had don this.
After installing these packages everything is OK, whith the exception tha
compiz freezes randomly, but this seems to me not related.

Updates have broken GNOME on Ubuntu 8
I can confirm this bug too. Compiz freezes randomly, but i found a way to
enforce the freeze:
(1) open gnome-terminal
(2) $gedit &
(3) ALT-TAB back to terminal
(4) $gedit &
At this point the freeze occurs, but not yet completely.
The display freeze, but keyboard is reacts normal, as i see in gedit
