This has all just gone bad for me :( Seems to have been caused by a
recent Ubuntu update as it worked fine on 9.10 Karmic until I installed
updates.

Excellent, that seemed to work.
Now I need to fix my updates as I have not had any updates in days so I
assume they're broken.
