Apologies for the delay. I've now tested the latest upstream kernel.
Resume still fails with the same symptoms as above, both with X running
and without.

This problem occurs on resume both from suspend and hibernate. It's a
second-hand Toshiba Satellite P10 that I was given recently, and I
don't have any information on any problems it might have had before.
This Ubuntu 10.10 is the first Linux system ever installed on it.
