Hmm, it the same problem on my Hardy 8.04LTS Alpha4 UpToDate (x86)

MB: Intel D865PERL
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.2 (S478)
Ram: 2x 1Gb Dual PC-3200
GPU: X1950Pro 512Mb AGP
Sound: Audigy2 Platinum EX

Same problem when the fglrx 8.02 is Activate and my HIS X1950Pro AGP,
the System not boot!

The PCI to AGP britge is not Installet, and lsmod|grep agp it this
result:

and the Mainboard is a AGP 4x /8x Model: Intel D865PERL! OK i go testing
this tipp, install first the Driver, and the xserver-xgl!
