You may want to consider hd-idle as a workaround. It checks for
read/write activity and spins the drive down a la hdparm -Y after a
specified timeout.

I also experience occasional key jams, when the system freezes during a key
press, resulting in locking the repeat for 1-2 seconds.

I confirm the bug. All of the symptoms occur on my compal jlf92 with
ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 32-bit. Haven't tested 11.04 and 11.10. Older
kernels do not help.
