upstream. the kernel will continue receiving updates in ubuntu after every
minor release from upstream, but if the patch doesn't get released till say,
version 3.2, and ubuntu is shipping 3.1, the patch won't show up.

I can't remember when exactly has the problem started.. But all I
remember, is that at some point in raring, the disk was working fine.
Then a long period passed when I never tried it, and I upgraded to
Saucy, and now I realize it isn't working.
The disk is a SATA laptop-size
try changing the mirror you are using to resolve this.
type in a terminal:
sudo software-properties-gtk (or sudo software-properties-kde if using
KDE)
and change the mirror to anything else

yeah, for me too it seems. though it's a sure way to get my router to block me
as a potential "DOS attack", but that's another story...
no hanging/freezing anymore, and can see a functioning fill bar with ping
targets below it.

if it helps, i booted without quiet and splash to see the actual kernel
output when it stops loading, then compared it to a normal boot with a
2.6 kernel. the last lines outputted before it stops are:

Kernel 3.0 (11.10 default kernel) won't boot unless acpi=off, worked
fine with the default
that won't be necessary. check the link for the upstream bug report. there's
already a patch available, just awaiting further dev instructions/confirmation.
if acceptable, i can post the patch here for others to try it, and confirm it
also fixes their bug, just to make sure we're all discussing t
same issue as with OP, system hangs 1 second after boot. turning off
acpi solves the problem, but that's not really a good option, hyper
threading gets disabled as well with it. all previous kernel versions
worked fine.

style. the extension is written in java apparently.
i started libreoffice in a terminal to see crash output, attached along the bug
