that when the mute turns off, my laptop makes a *plop* sound. This

I was wrong, it's not caused by Rhythmbox. On an other workspace I started
VirtualBox in full screen mode. Because it's fullscreen all messages with a low
priority are hidden.
But this is not right, notify-osd must know on what workspace I am. Is there a
workaround for this problem?

It started happening when I switched to Gnome. At first I had both Gnome and
Unity next to each other and when I logged in to Unity, I could still change
the backlight normally.
It only doesn't work under Gnome strangely.

I think I've the same problem.
Updated yesterday, started my computer this morning and after the boot screen
I'm only seeing a blinking cursor on a black screen.
Tought it had something todo with lightdm, but nothing I tried fixed it.
After that I've removed all nvidia packages: sudo apt-get purg
I've fixed it by not only downgrading nvidia-common to 1:0.2.91.4 but also
ubuntu-drivers-common to 1:0.2.91.4.
After that I've reinstalled the nvidia-331-updates and everything works again.
