I got past the issue by removing all the packages listed here for my distro.
Upgrade is now commencing.

I'm not well versed in Linux. Please tell me how to generate and post
the verbose pulse-audio log. You also said "you have to specify correcr
extin and extout so that the driver won't create those headphone ,
headphone lfe controls if your card does not c
One thing I'd like to add is that sound was working correctly on my
previous versions of Ubuntu up to 10.x or so.

Generally if I change volume in the application or at the main volume control,
volume does change by sound stutters badly. Eventually it will stop stuttering
