There is a patch which adds support to use grub from a multipathed
device. I've tested it and it works fine. Just adding this hunk of the
patch is enough for the installer:

can you try just downgrading the libdrm to the version on intrepid? That
should be possible using the current versions. IIRC wgrant had this
issue when we were at UDS, and downgrading libdrm helped.

I can't reproduce it, using nvidia binary drivers. You need to get a
proper backtrace using the procedure documented here:

You might also try a livecd if it happens there. If not, it's something
in your installation that's causing it.

Yes, since they divert the GL libraries, for instance. Purge them, they
probably were pulled in when there was a bug in one nvidia package
dependancies (or similar, can't remember).

this is a hardware issue and not a software bug. All my thinkpads have
suffered from a similar issue where the 'nipple' mouse sometimes makes
the cursor move for a while after you let it go. Same thing can happen
with touchpads.
