ok, so the lshal output looks normal. Probably the three xkb related
commits in 1.5.2 that broke it, but it needs to be verified and after
that let upstream know about it.

It's the safe boot option of livecd, used when booting normally doesn't
work. That's the case when the proper driver can't do proper
modesetting, which is too common at least for nv.
You can lower the priority if you like, but it should still be a simple
fix to the postinst, and enough time to get

sounds more like a problem in the kernel, perhaps the switch back to
vesafb broke it. The safe mode disables usplash. Your display driver is
the same in both cases.
