I am having the same problems that Tom has (same kernels result in same
functionality) but with a Thinkpad X61s. I first noticed it a couple of
days before Xmas and tried to upgrade my BIOS from the almost oldest to
the current one. Did not make a difference though.

My earlier comments were all regarding -11.24. On a X61s vendor
backlight control has to be used. Without the modprobe option I can
write any value to the brightness controls in /sys or /proc w/o getting
any changes.

Putting the attached script in .kde/Autostart (or just running it
manually) activates most of the missing hotkeys on my thinkpad. In
particular it supports
* lock screen
* suspend
* hibernate
* toggle screen
* undock
* battery information
I have used the script for a month now and for me it works

The binary file (scponlyc) used for chrooted environments does not have
the SUID bit enabled. This way nobody is able to login as the chroot
cannot be performed with user privileges.

There is already an debconf question for file permissions that should be
set on scponlyc. The problem is that it is not shown on installation
(using defaults on (k)ubuntu). A dpkg-reconfigure scponly brings it up
and solves the problem.

As at least some people are using my script (comment #22), I gave it a
quick update for Karmic or rather KDE 4.4. Now the used dbus path should
be all valid once more and all claimed buttons do what they are supposed
to.
