I get the same issue with a new installation of Maverick (not an update from
Lucid to Maverick).
Inkscape 0.48 works fine with windows XP on the same computer.

Update of my previous post : I get this issue with my desktop, but
Inkscape 0.48 works perfectly with Ubuntu 10.10 (on an external USB disk
drive) on my laptop (Toshiba Qosmio F60 10J).
