I make a usr.sqfs with issuing:
mksquashfs /usr usr.sqfs
The relevant entries in /etc/fstab are then

unionfs /usr unionfs nodev,noatime,dirs=/.filesystems/usr/overlay=rw:/us
Hi, I can confirm that the problem vanishes with karmic, using the 2.6.30-5
kernel,
using a v4 squashfs file..
I see following todo for karmic:
- Needage of squahsfs-tools v4
The v3 and v4 are incompatible, both from kernel and squashfs-tools.
squashfs-tools should the be provided in the two v

ok, it is a /usr/local problem. Had some libraries also installed there.
LD_PRELOAD=/usr fusion-icon
worked around that problem. The nuking /usr/local/lib/libg* did the final job.

Same story here,
mounting aufs over sqashfs on /usr breaks boot, relevant /etc/fstab entries:
/.filesystems/usr/usr.sqfs /usr squashfs ro,loop,nodev 0 0
aufs /usr aufs br:/.filesystems/usr/overlay=rw:/usr=ro 0 0
The workaround, I have to life for a while, is to #comment aufs,
after boot, un-c
Here it works with ppa:vanvugt/compiz-preproposed
I can't move maximised windows with mouse, but very much better.
