This problem also concerns me, problems started after upgrade to natty.
I tried removing (with --purge) grub2 and grub-pc packages and reinstalling
them.
That didn't make any difference.

It seems that if I remove "recordfail" option then grub2 fails to boot every
time and seems to be stuck just showing the background-image.
Only when recordfail is active, the next boot up starts correctly.
