It seems current versions of OpenSC/OpenCT work fine with my OmniKey
6121. So I'm going to use the OpenSC supplied PKCS#11 library and NOT
the proprietary (HiPath SIcurity Card API V3.1.010) PKCS#11 library.
Problem solved for me.

I'm aware there's no direct relation between firefox and pcscd. It is
incompatibility between PKCS#11 shared object and pcscd causes firefox
to crash. Nevertheless I haven't changed my PKCS#11 library (and there's
no newer version) and it is the pcscd upgrade that led to firefox
crashes.

I'm not sure this is the same bug - but the timing and symptoms are the
same. In my case though DRM is failing. It says:

Same problem here. Ubuntu 14.10. Backup on samba share. Manual backup
works ok. Adding samba host to /etc/hosts fixed it for me.

Used to work for me immediately after upgrade. Then I've installed
pidgin-libnotify, and hit the problem described above. After removing
pidgin-libnotify it still doesn't work.

Fixed after both deinstalling pidgin-libnotify AND rm
~/.config/indicators/messages/applications-blacklist/pidgin-libnotify
Then installed pidgin-libnotify and the problem reoccured.

After upgrading my ThinkPad x260 to Ubuntu 24.10, I was no longer able
to boot older kernels. (I need to do that because the latest kernel
where suspend/resume works is 6.5.) With the fix from oracular-proposed,
I can boot older kernels again.
