Just a note to Vanessa - I have this same problem on precise with ATI -
if I leave the machine for a day or so when I come back I get the blank
screen with just a mouse cursor issue.
Today I found that if you just wait - on the order of 4-5 minutes - the

I just bought an S3 today and I can verify that this is a problem on
12.04 LTS fully up to date.
If I mount the phone in PTP mode Rhythmbox won't see it, but if I mount
it in MTP mode it shows up as "Media Player" above.
Manually moving files to and from the device works just fine, but
