Strangely, there's no lockups so far tonight. The only thing I did
different from my usual was to do a bit of audio conversion using
soundconverter. That's about it.
I have no idea how that prevents the lockups from happening, but I'd
just like to mention it in case it points to any clues I'm not

After a bit more "testing", I found that if I use Audio CD Extractor,
then it too has the similar effect of working around the lockup. So
currently I'm assuming that any activity involving audio encoding will
prevent the lockups for the session, for reasons unknown

Never had this with XP back when I was still using it. Only more recent
Ubuntu releases are giving me this problem. I think it started around
the time of Feisty. It was only the occasional hang that I didn't give
it any attention but it looks like it's getting worse with each Ubuntu

I'm pretty sure it's not my cooling system. Once I get past the "first
boot" hurdle, the PC works perfectly fine for hours. I run for at least
2 - 3 hours (more during weekends, of course ;-)

I thought 2.6.27 is not available for Hardy? Or, did you mean for me to
get it from PPA? I have no troubles installing .deb packages on my own.

I think I've finally figured this one out. Adam Niedling's suspicion
turned out to be correct. It's a problem with my video hardware. Somehow
it causes these lockups occasionally. My best guess is the PCIe
contact's not so good causing Ubuntu to hickup. Once I "service" the

clicking on the workspace switcher works fine.
If Compiz is enabled, then using the workspace switcher causes the

I also have this issue but would like to add one more thing: Compiz
didn't run for me. Even manually enabling it I get an error saying
Compiz can't start.
After removing evms last night, this morning when I tried enabling

Feisty Live where sometimes it logs in fine but sometimes it asks me for
username & password. A CD check revealed that 1 file failed

Since yesterday, I've been getting similar problems. Yesterday 1 lockup
and today 3 already in quick succession!
In my case, it seems to be a gradual lockup. Various programs still
respond to some mouse input, cursor keeps on blinking like everything's
normal, i can still switch tabs in FireFox. B
I get the same green artifacts playing any h.264 encoded video (mp4,
mkv) using Ubuntu's default movie player. The artifacts always appears
on the left side of the video.
VLC has no such problem as so many posters above have mentioned.

install Edgy. I can't seem to access the main site & wiki easily
recently so I've been waiting to get back into Feisty (unsuccessfully).

This bug is still present in Karmic. It's gotten more frequent too.
Usually my first attempt to burn a DVD+R will give a "Unknown Error"
from Brasero. I'm using the same media as previously mentioned (MCC).
I have to eject the disc after the error appears then reinsert the same
DVD into the drive
Been using pulseaudio from the ppa for about a month. This particular
bug looks solved.
Only thing is the volume frequently "resets" to 0% on boot up to desktop
and I have to manually increase it. I'm not sure if that's a pulseaudio
bug or volume control or something else.

The LiveUSB?
After creating a LiveUSB with space for storing changes, I find any
changes I've made in the Live session isn't saved. Once I reboot all
changes are gone. It's as if I were on a LiveCD session.
usb-creator used is from Maverick, ISO is the latest Natty image.

Artefact in
I think you're right. It does seem to be some sort of video memory
corruption. It doesn't happen immediately on boot but after about half
an hour after I've run some applications. Happens to a different tooltip
everytime, but once it happens that tooltip's stuck with the artefact
until reboot. So I
I'm getting this on Ubuntu 15.10.
Tried editing /etc/samba/smb.conf and restarting samba as suggested but
no apparent change.
